Born: 12.6.1941 in Ploesti (Romania). 

Parents: Josefine Umstätter and Dr. Ing. Hans Umstätter

Brothers: Hans Horst Umstätter and Werner Umstätter. 

Maried with Mechthild Umstätter nee: Bösinger (Parents Dr. Margarete Bösinger and pastor Rudolf Bösinger

Children: PhD Richard Umstätter and Dr. Christina Umstätter

Thesis in biology at the Free University of Berlin. 

Initialisation and continuation of the first on-line-information service in a German university library (1975 - 1982 in Ulm, under the leadership of Dr. Margarethe Rehm). 

At same time lecturer at the school for medical record assistants.From 1982 - 1992 Professor for library and information studies (especially for documentation, online retrieval, and bibliographies in special fields) at the Polytechnics for Librarianship and Documentation in Cologne. 

In the eighties also part-time lecturer at the Institute for Library Science at the University of Cologne. From 1993 - 1994 Professor for new media at the Polytechnics for Librarianship and Documentation in Cologne.

Since March 1994 Professor, and repeatedly head of the Institute for Library Science (later on Institute for Library and Information Science) at the Humboldt-University of Berlin. Special topics: Computerization in libraries, modern media, indexing, and classification with modern technology.For some years: member of the editorial board of the journal "Nachrichten für Dokumentation". Vice president of the Society for Science Studies in Berlin, part of the managing committee of the German section of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) and cofounder of "Der Förderverein Bibliothek Altlandsberg e. V."
