Research Interests

Phylogeny and systematics of Diptera Nematocera, especially Simuliidae (zoogeography, larval behaviour, bioacoustics, ecology, cytotaxonomy) and Bibionidae. Forensic medicine.

• Post-doctoral grant from the "Leopoldina" for the research project: "Ultrastructural analysis of sound-production in the Simuliidae", carried out at the Natural History Museum, London, and the University of South Carolina, Clemson, USA
• Collaboration with the University of South Carolina, Clemson, USA, on the project "Cytotaxonomy of the Simuliidae", on the subgenera and species-complexes in the genus Simulium in Europe
• Post-doctoral grant for a research project on “Günther Enderlein - The life and career of a German entomologist”, who worked on Diptera and published extensively on the family Simuliidae
• "Bioacoustic patterns" and problems in the Simuliidae (Diptera)
• Research project on “Dipterous predators of the Simuliidae (Diptera)”, to investigate the potential of predators to regulate or diminish the numbers of blackflies
• Post-doctoral grant for research on the blackfly species-spectrum in the restored “Water system of the River Oder and its tributaries”, with reference to the genetic variability and adaptation of the pest species
• Research project to determine the “Habitat requirements of the blackfly Simulium (Schoenbaueria) nigrum” at the easternmost limit of its range in Central Europe
