Am 02. November 2004 wird Richard E. Stern von der Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ am Institut zu Gast sein.

Richard Stern hat gerade sein Sabbatical und widmet sich in dieser Zeit dem Thema Measures of Scholarship, wobei die beiden zentralen Fragestellungen lauten:

- What are measures of scholarship?
- What is the value of the use of measures of scholarship in the promotion and tenure review process?

Entsprechend ist der erste der beiden Programmpunkte am IB eine (szientometrisch-hochschulpolitische) Diskussionsrunde zum Thema "Measures of Scholarship"

Diese wird ab 16:00 Uhr in der Saur-Bibliothek stattfinden. Richard Stern hat im Vorfeld einige Schwerpunkte, die er gern mit den Mitarbeitern erörtern möchte, mitgeteilt:

Questions for my colleagues at Humboldt University:

1. How will the change in German universities from the Habilitation degree to the system with a new junior professorship (Juniorprofessur) affect how scholarship is evaluated in the promotion and tenure process.

2. What are your personal experiences with the promotion and tenure review process of scholarship?

3. Are the questions I posed at Seton Hall relevant for the promotion and tenure process in Germany? (sh. unten)

4. How can academic reference librarians utilize their search skills to assist faculty in the process of measuring and evaluating faculty scholarship?

Die unter 3.) angesprochenen Fragen wurden auf einem Faculty Panel Anfang Oktober in Seton Hall diskutiert.

Ausgangspunkt sind die "three sets of criteria for tenure and promotion: teaching, service & scholarship", wobei gefragt wird, wie sich der Anteil der "scholarship" zu den beiden anderen Kriterien verhält.

Weitere sehr interessante Fragen sind: "Publications practices and norms differ by discipline. How do you find out publication practices and norms of disciplines outside your own?", "How do you discern the relative contribution of an author for a publication in which there are two or more authors?" und "To what exetent does scholarship recognition (what I call "measures of scholarship") such as evaluations by colleagues, reviews, citations, awards, etc. enter into judgements of scholarship?".

Studierende sind natürlich herzlich zum Besuch der Veranstaltung eingeladen.

Der zweite Programmpunkt ist ein Vortrag im Berliner Bibliothekswissenschaftlichen Kolloquium zum Thema Co-browsing at the Reference Desk.

Die zentralen Fragestellungen des Vortrags sind folgende:

1. What are typical information needs for students and faculties (users) ar Humboldt University and other German universities?

2. Which options are there for users to access personal reference assistance: at the reference desk, telephone, online (instant messaging, chat, email, virtual reference system, etc.)?

3. Are library reference services actively used at the Humboldt University and other German universities?

4. Do librarians use computers at the reference desk to assist users?

5. When a librarian uses a computer how does she or he involve the user?

6. What is co-browsing? (Richard Stern)

7. Is there any advantage to the user if co-browsing is available at the reference desk?

Der Vortrag findet wie immer in der Saur-Bibliothek statt und ist wie immer für alle Institutsangehörigen, Studierenden und die interessierte Öffentlichkeit offen. Besonders relevant ist er sicherlich für die Mitarbeiter der Universitätsbibliothek bzw. generell wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken.

Beide Veranstaltungen werden in englischer Sprache stattfinden.
